How You Can Achieve Smoother Skin Today

Our skin’s texture is determined by a number of internal and environmental factors. Genes, hormones, blood circulation, humidity, UV rays, pollution, and more, all play a role. It’s not always easy, or even possible, to control all of these forces or their effects on your skin, of course. But if you want smoother skin, you do have a say in the matter. Let’s discuss how you can start achieving smoother skin today.

How to Get Smooth Skin

Take Care of Your Overall Health

The appearance of our skin is often an indication of our overall health. In other words, when your body is healthy and well-balanced, your skin will follow suit — after all, every part of your body is connected. As such, the first step toward smoother skin is adopting a healthier lifestyle. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night (7-9 hours for most people), reduce your intake of inflammatory substances such as refined sugars and excessive carbohydrates, alcohol, and processed foods, exercise 3-5 days a week (this will increase blood flow and reduce inflammation), and stay hydrated throughout the day. These small lifestyle changes serve as a strong foundation for healthy, smooth skin.

Limit Your Time in the Sun

When temperatures rise and the sun comes out, many people flock outdoors to get some color on their bare skin. Unfortunately, getting a tan is not good for your skin, even if you like the way it looks. Indeed, tanned skin is a sign of sun damage, and too much sun exposure can actually destroy your skin’s natural collagen and dehydrate you, leading to prematurely-aged, rough skin (not to mention skin cancer) — the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. So, resist the urge to sunbathe, and if you are planning on staying outdoors for extended periods of time, cover up with SPF 30+ sunscreen and protective clothing to properly shield your skin.

Moisturize on a Daily Basis

Smooth skin is well-hydrated skin, so moisturizing once or twice a day (as directed) should be a priority. Beyond maintaining a moisturizing routine, it’s equally important to use the right moisturizing products for your skin type. If your skin is naturally oily, for instance, you’ll want to use oil-free products that contain hyaluronic acid. Those with dry skin can benefit from moisturizers containing ceramides and other natural oils. Moisturizers containing retinoids can also aid in the reduction and prevention of wrinkles. Before choosing products for your skin, speak with your dermatologist.

Exfoliate and Cleanse Your Skin

Your skin won’t look or feel its smoothest if it’s not properly cleaned. Dirt, debris, natural oils, dead skin cells, and other substances can clog our pores, leading to acne and inflammation. Merely cleaning your skin’s surface isn’t enough to remove all of the gunk that has gained entry into your skin — for that, you need to cleanse and exfoliate your skin regularly. There are various facial cleansing products on the market designed for different skin types (some are more aggressive than others). As for exfoliation, this can be achieved mechanically (i.e. abrasive scrubs and tools) or chemically (i.e. certain acids, such as alpha-hydroxy or lactic acids). Again, your dermatologist can help you find the right cleansers and exfoliating treatments for your unique skin for the best, smoothest results.

Get Smoother Skin with Cosmetic Dermatology Treatments

When lifestyle adjustments and over-the-counter products aren’t quite enough to get you the smooth skin you desire, you might also seek various treatments from cosmetic dermatology professionals. These options include but are not limited to:

  • Chemical peels (various strengths and durations)
  • Facials
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Sclerotherapy (for removing varicose/spider veins)
  • Laser therapies (including ablative and non-ablative laser resurfacing, laser hair removal, etc.)
  • …and more

No matter how uneven or rough your skin may be at the moment, smooth skin is not out of reach. Achieving smooth skin will not occur overnight, but the sooner you begin this journey, the sooner you’ll reap the benefits.
